Pinkham Notch

NH Route 16, White Mountains, New Hampshire

Pinkham Notch is home to the famous Presidential Range of the White Mountains, the center of which is the highest mountain in the Northeastern US, Mount Washington. At 6,288' above sea level, on a clear day you can see the Atlantic Ocean. This mountain holds the distinction of having winds of 231 mph recorded in 1934, by the Mount Washington Observatory. The summit is accessible by many routes and many events hosted there throughout the year.

The US Forest Service and the Appalachain Mountain Club have visitor centers here, providing practical information and assistance to sightseers and those wishing to visit the backcountry. The Appalachain Trail passes over the highest peaks and there is a hut system available for hikers.

Wildcat Mountain offers skiing, snowboarding, gondola and zip-line rides and has the most continuous vertical of any ski area in the White Mountains, (2,112'). Tuckerman Ravine on Mt. Washington holds snow late into May or June and is popular with backcountry skiers and climbers.
